Table for Five

table for five using laminate shelf shelving and ikea chairs

I think this is my very favorite thing in my house … it’s definitely the most used project we’ve done.
Superman built this at the end of the summer, when I presented him with a challenge: seat 5 kids in a 6 square foot space. The outcome was perfect!

The table, or ‘bar’ if you will, is a 6 foot shelf from Home Depot. I picked one that was laminate (read: WATER PROOF) for $13.

Then, I found a couple two way shelf brackets and spray painted those with a white enamel spray paint to match. $6/each. (But cheaper on Amazon)

The chairs are from IKEA, and came in at $12.99/each (although, you can apparently buy them on Amazon and have them shipped to you for free, for $22.95 ... in case you don't have an IKEA close by).

He mounted the table just under the window sill and then caulked the tiny gap between the two. It was a super easy project, took a couple hours of time, and cost about $90, including chairs. In the event that you find yourself needing to seat quintuplets in a small space, you now have the solution. ;)

  6. my grandmother had a kids table like this when my cousins and i were growing up (think 30yrs ago...lol). it was set up at her lake house right under a window like this. the only difference is that she had hers hanging by a chain on each end of the table and hinges underneath with slide locks on the ends so the table could be lifted up out of the way when not being used. my cousins and i would sit there for crafts and meals during the summers. i absolutely adore this and havent seen something like this in YEARS.

    1. Embarrassingly, I'm just now seeing this. At the time you sent this comment, I had just had surgery and wasn't really 'with it'. And somehow, I skimmed over it when I got back 'with it'. ;) Thanks so much! I don't even know what it means to be featured. I'll come by and check it out. Three months later. ;)

      Thanks!!

  10. Can you tell me the area in HD you found the shelf? I can't find it for the life of me!

  11. It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure I got it on the same aisle as the crown moldings. We had to paint the sides.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!!

  13. I LOVE this idea. I pinned it a long time ago but now we are moving to a new house that has a perfect window to make a eating or art nook for the kiddos. Would you please be able to tell me the height you have the shelf/table? I thought I would see if our window would work or it might be too low. Thank you for your time :)

    1. So sorry for the slow response! I think that it's about 20-22" from floor to window sill. I'll get a tape measure out tomorrow and double check. Sorry about that. Some comments come to my email, others don't. It's weird.

  15. Cute idea. There is one thing I notice. The cord hanging down within reach of your little ones. There are a few things you can do. Replace the window covering with a cordless option OR get a fashionwand that you can attach to the product so the cord is completely covered. The little ones won't be able to ever get hurt on the cord. www.fashionwand.com
