The $750 Complete Kitchen Remodel

Finally. Here it is.

$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 1
It took a total of 5 weeks, start to finish. Minus 2 days. 2 days shy of 5 weeks … not bad, considering that this was a one man project. I’m telling you. He. Is. Superman.

Without further chatter, here are the before pictures:

IMG_3376
Typical builder grade, pre-fab wood cabinets … complete with bright white wood trimmed formica. And uber boring backsplash.

IMG_3377
Lots of fake/faux wood veneer on every side panel of the cabinets. Builder penny pinching at its finest.

IMG_3378
I would like to say that there wasn’t anything wrong with our kitchen. If your kitchen looks like mine, it’s a lovely fully functioning kitchen … it’s just boring. That’s all. ;)

IMG_3383
And the desk. Oh man. The desk. Two tiny cabinets that didn’t hold much at all. That desk was a continual struggle for my OCD self.

IMG_3385
Paper hanging lanterns … cause I used to think they looked ‘cool’. I don’t know. I really just don’t know. So, don’t ask.

IMG_3382
This 7” white porcelain sink might have been my absolute least favorite thing about this very plain kitchen. It was the ‘armpit’ of the kitchen, if you will.
IMG_3411
And finally, my el cheapo IKEA chair … purchased many years ago out of desperation when I just couldn’t find a desk chair (within my budget) that I liked.

Combine all those boring builder grade (or worse) aspects … wait 6 1/2 years … and you’ll be where I was at. I was just plain tired of that kitchen. Tired of keeping it clean. Tired of cooking in it. Entertaining in it. Doing dishes in it. I needed change.

And … here we are:

$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 1
Superman ripped out the crown moulding on the cabinets and replaced it with thicker moulding, added trim on the bottom side of the cabinets, installed under cabinet lighting, replaced the veneer side panels with trimmed bead board, painted the inside and outside of the cabinets, replaced the counters with marble, replaced the sink, replaced the backsplash with split faced travertine, replaced light fixtures … and then, called it quits. :D
$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 2
There really are no words for the finished product. That backsplash consists of 1,700 tiles … each placed one at a time.
$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 3
The marble tiles used for the countertops were painstakingly cut to be installed with a zero grout line.
$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 4
We found unfinished cabinets at Home Depot for roughly $200 … and Superman finished them out with paint, crown moulding, bead board, and under trim to match the rest. He’s going to install under cabinet lighting here as well … and clearly, we have a cord situation that we need to take care of; but, overall, I am very pleased with the desk area.

I kissed all of the IKEA mirrors and clutter goodbye … and hung a homemade-by-Superman triple mirror in its place.

how to refinish a kitchen table after2
Superman even refinished my kitchen table … read about that here.

We also replaced the paper lantern with an identical ceiling fan … this is Dallas, people. You cannot have too many ceiling fans … and this new addition makes ceiling fan #9 for this house. :D

$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets 5
The lights above the sink and desk are original to the home … we dug them back out of the attic and spray painted the brass bases with the oil rubbed bronze paint.

He did such a beautiful job … I am truly one spoiled girl.

One of my favorite parts is the new stainless 9” deep sink and goose neck faucet, with built in soap dispenser. :D I know I sound silly. It’s the little things.

$750 total kitchen remodel sherwin williams turkish coffee bead board cabinets ikea swivel chair 7
To give the chair a face lift, he sprayed the base with oil rubbed bronze spray paint … and then painted the seat and back to match the cabinets. I love it!

So, here are the before and after pictures … side by side.

Here is the break down of cost, for those interested in duplicating something similar:

Marble tiles (Crema Fedora): $200 (about 100 feet at $2/ft)

Paint (Sherwin Williams Turkish Coffee in an oil based glossy enamel): $50

Sink and faucet (sold together as a set at Home Depot): $250

Pre-fab unfinished cabinets: $200

Under cabinet lighting: $50

We spent a total of about $750 … but that backsplash was free for us. Superman brought it home about 5 years ago when he was working in home building. Another homeowner didn’t like the backsplash, so it was ripped off the wall. We cut the tiles off the fiberglass backing and scraped all the glue off and then installed them one at a time. It was a labor of love … but that same backsplash would have been $15/ft otherwise.

I’m currently pricing new appliances … I’ve found several appliance packages for all 4 of our built in appliances that sell for around $800 for all 4 total, through Craigslist. I’m just trying to sell a few things to pay for them, so I don’t feel guilty going out of pocket for an unnecessary purchase. The bulk of this kitchen remodel was funded by Christmas money we received from my parents, Gary’s parents, and family. Gotta love that. ;)

What do you think? Worth $750?? ;)

PS- I do not know why all of my pictures are blurry when I upload them. They aren’t blurry on my computer. Sorry.

  2. Wow! You are right in calling your husband "superman". I am super impressed. It is amazing how the new things make your kitchen "pop" now. And the fact that you did it for under $800 is amazing. I think my favorite change is the bead board at the sides and ends of the cabinets. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Wow! When I saw the picture on Facebook, I thought it was my kitchen (the boring builder grade one). Now I'm staring at my kitchen thinking....I wonder....

Super impressed! Especially that the backsplash was put on one tile at a time. Amazing. Great job guys!

  4. A-mazing, indeed. Do you hire Superman out? Unfortunately, my hubby is the antithesis of Superman. And that's being nice. :) So awesome that you have one in-house. I'm loving all your color and design choices. I bet you are so happy now, being able to sit and watch the hours of the Presidential race, all-the-while looking over and seeing a beautiful new kitchen. Yay! So happy for you!

  10. It looks amazing. And I have to say, I would never have noticed those cords in the picture by the computer desk if you hadn't said anything about them. When you said there was a cord problem, I had to examine the picture for a minute to figure out what you were talking about, because the desk looked perfect! I hope that helps you feel better about it (:

  17. I swear we have the same kitchen(your before kitchen) the same color cabinets, same material same window with the bench seat, same desk(always cluttered) and the exact layout even the entrance is arched! and our countertops are white and so is the sink..yuck! PLEASE share how the cabinets were refinished...did superman sand down or just paint over it? I love that you can still see the wood grain. We just bought this house less than a year ago in Houston and this is going to be our first big change!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love it!!! How long do you think the paint will last? I am thinking about asking my husand to do this for me!!! Did you put a clear coat over the paint or did was paint all you need?

    1. It's been 8 months. No scratches anywhere. He just sanded everything until the shines/gloss was gone. Then painted.

  19. I was wondering what you painted the cabinets and beadboard with? It looks like dark stain, b/c you can see the grain, but you said paint....would love to redo my kitchen! It looks incredible!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Okay ladies,

The kitchen cabinets were painted, not stained. Superman did sand them down. He sanded them down until there was absolutely no glossy anywhere on either side. He's a perfectionist. Do I think it was necessary to sand them down THAT much? No. Are they holding up? ABSOLUTELY. They look the same today as they did 3 months ago. No chips.

He sprayed the paint on using a paint canister hooked up to an air compressor. You could totally brush the paint on as well. Just use a soft bristled brush to minimize the appearance of brush strokes.

Basically, you just need to scuff up the existing stain. Rough it up with steel wool, sand paper, or stripper. Then spray or brush the paint on. Bottom line: no matter how you apply it, it's going to look WAY better than what's already there.

Finally, the paint we used is Sherwinn Williams Turkish Coffee. I asked for a GLOSSY oil based ENAMEL. It was roughtly $50/gallon (not cheap!). So, we didn't use a clear coat (nor do I recommend ever using them because they yellow over time). The gloss came already in the paint. I swear by Sherwinn Williams. All they do is paint. I trust no one else. ;)

Even without a Superman husband, y'all could totally do this!! It just takes time and patience. Maybe when the kids go back to school? haha.

He hardibackered the tops and sides of the cabinets and then laid the tile on top of that. It made the counters about 1/2" higher than they were before. I hope that helps. Good luck!!

    1. My husband used to work in the home building industry as a Superintendent and saw it done in new homes back then. So, we shopped around and couldn't find any granite tiles (for cheap) that we liked, so we decided on marble. Zero regrets with our choice there, for sure. :D

  31. It’s just amazing how simply painting the cabinets with a dark color made your kitchen more elegant. The backsplash and countertop were given a very sophisticated style. This is actually a kind of design that I only see in pictures of luxurious modern homes. You did more than remodel the kitchen - you almost transformed it into something new.

I was wondering about the beadboard, were the old panels removed or was the beadboard just secured over the top of the existing cabinets? Thank you!

    1. We didn't remove the old panels. We just used liquid nails and stuck them on the old ... and then shot it on real good with some brad nails along the top and bottom.

Good luck! The cabinets were by far the easiest part!

  35. I came over after seeing a comment you left at Better After. I am going to be updating my kitchen this summer and wanted to find out how you like your countertops? This is the first I've heard of zero grout lines with tiles --- my laminate is a pale pink....and not the worst...but not really were I want to stay. So...(1) Did you just lay the tile over the countertops you had? (2) How are they to keep clean - does "gunk" get stuck in them? Have they discolored??

Thanks for answering if you have the time! casserole14 at gmail dot com

    Replies
    1. Yeah. Pale pink laminate? You need some marble or granite tiles in your life. ;)

The marble is installed on top of the old countertops. My husband just screwed down a product called Hardibacker on to the tops and sides of the counters and then laid the tiles on top using Thin Set.

A zero grout line is deceiving ... it's not actually zero. It's like 1/16th of an inch kind of zero. So, there ARE very thin lines of grout between each tile. And nope, it doesn't get gunky or yucky at all. We sealed the grout really well with a grout sealer and just maintain it on a regular basis to keep everything looking new.

Hope that helps! Good luck with the pale pink. It's so liberating to get rid of it!!

  38. I love your kitchen especially because the colour is similar to mine. I was lucky my Dad refinished my cabinets. They were oak so he stripped and stained them dark for me. The pantry I left because the previous owners added it later and it is the oak veneer and I wasn't sure how I wanted to handle it. I see how you did and it has given me some ideas. I have been saving to replace one appliance a year, I have the fridge to replace and I want to put a microwave/hood fan in...

  41. Can you clarify a few things please? Sounds like you used only one gallon of paint on the entire set of cupboards. Is this correct? And did you paint all of the insides too or just the fronts? We are SOOOO going to do this! We love it!! Thanks for all the details.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, you are correct. Just one gallon. Not even a gallon. Still lots left. We painted all of the cabinet base (the part you attach the doors to) and then the front and back of the doors. Good luck! I'd love to hear how it turns out!

      Delete
  42. Wow, that's awesome! You're cabinets are fairly light. How does it look when you open them and see light backs with dark fronts? Ours are a darker oak and I'm concerned how they will look since we plan on selling in a few years.
Did you spray or brush it on? One or two coats? Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's hard to describe my cabinets, but we painted everything that was previously stained wood. We didn't paint the insides of the cabinets because it is just a prefab base that all/most cabinets look like on the inside regardless of the color the wood on the outside is stained. So, it doesn't look funny at all. It looks like the house came with chocolate brown cabinets. We painted the front AND back of the doors, so anything that was stained before got painted. Are in the insides of your cabinets actually wood? Not sure I've ever seen insides of cabinets that were actually wood/stained. Mine are more like laminate.

Not sure if you've read through the post at all, but it explains the process he did to paint them pretty well. He sprayed the paint on using his air compressor and paint canister, but you could paint them with a brush and they would still look nice. We only used one coat, but he sanded quite a bit. Just depends on how dark or light you are going ... you might need 2. But, you'll know after the first coat if you need another one.

      Good luck! :D

  43. I apologize....I should re-read the post for details as I must have forgotten some of the info. We read it awhile back and my "Superman" began researching the paint from Sherwin-Williams and measuring and calculating. Now that we are re-visiting it, trying to decide priorities and which project needs to go first (we also need to get our land up for sale so there's lots of cleanup there too---UGH!) we have just forgotten alot.
I'm glad to hear they look fine on the inside because I was not much interested in doing all of that!!

  44. It looks like your trim is white. Did you change that yourself also? I would love to do my cabinets but all the wood in the house is oak.. trim, doors, etc. Looks lovely!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Which trim are you referring to? Trying to guess ... are you talking about the wood trim around the laminate? If so ... the white that you see now is actually marble. The countertops are marble tiles and my husband cut strips of marble to put on the edges of all the counters to cover that wood trim. Is that what you are referring to? It's the only thing I can think of because everything else is either the same or it was trim that got painted brown. I'm assuming you aren't talking about baseboard trim.

Let me know if I didn't answer your question. It's hard to explain through text sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. We bought it here: http://www.sbmtx.com/MARBLE_c_32.html

That place has sales all the time. It was marked down from $3.99 to 50% off. We bought in November of 2011, even though we knew it would be a few months before we got around to the kitchen. I probably shopped and searched for marble for 3 months before buying it. Good luck! Keep looking ... marble for $2/ft is possible.

My husband and I just bought our first home (YAY!) But the kitchen is in definite need of an upgrade. We have that awesome white 3x3" ceramic tiles as a countertop. Is the formica that you used in your kitchen the ones that come in sheets? And then did you cut the squares from the sheets to put them closer together? Or were they already individual tiles? I love your remodel and am looking to do the same thing within the next few weeks :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Kaitlyn,

We didn't use Formica. We replaced the Formica with marble tiles. The tiles were already cut in 12x12 tiles. My husband just screwed a cement board called Hardibacker on to the top of the countertops. Then he used thin set to adhere the tiles to the Hardibacker. He used a wet saw to cut the tiles to fit perfectly around corners, etc. And then he grouted over the top.

      Hope that helps!
